Who is Andrew Steele

Two hallmarks funded. Eight ignored.

Andrew Steele took a PhD in physics, decided that aging was the most important scientific and humanitarian challenge of our time, and moved into computational biology. He spent about five years there — and discovered something that shaped everything since: even biologists don’t know very much about aging. He is married to a doctor who, when he first started talking about this, thought he was crazy. He changed her mind, but the episode told him there was a public understanding problem sitting underneath the science.

So he wrote Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old — two years full-time, and harder than it looks, because aging touches every part of our biology and he is a perfectionist who had left formal biology training at school and was determined not to get anything wrong.

That care is the point, not a footnote. His view is that communicating aging has to be as scientifically rigorous as possible, because rigour is what lets the field say things people trust — and trust is what the field actually needs.

His most useful contribution here is a piece of arithmetic. His book breaks aging into ten hallmarks. Two — senescent cells and epigenetic reprogramming — have attracted enormous interest, attention and money. Which means eight are barely being looked at. Some are still on the drawing board; some work in cells or in mice. None promise a profit inside five years, so investors and pharma will not touch them yet.

His conclusion is unfashionable and probably correct: this is work best done by governments, who can take the long view that venture capital structurally cannot. Which produces the advice he actually gives — once the basics are handled, the most valuable thing you can do for your own longevity is spread the word.

Where we met

We met Andrew at the Longevity Summit in Dublin, near the start of the quest — two chairs in a quiet room, at a point when we were still working out what this film was going to be. He is one of the people who made the case that communication is not the soft part of this field but the load-bearing part, which is a large share of why the project ended up shaped the way it is.

Why a physicist wrote a biology book

He switched fields because of the size of the problem, then found that even working biologists had little detailed knowledge of aging — and that many still regard it as natural decline rather than something treatable.

Why the field stays small

Historically few people lectured undergraduates on aging biology, so few graduated with PhDs in it, so few went on to lecture. A self-limiting loop that kept the talent pool smaller than the problem deserves.

On leaving physics for aging

Andrew Steele“My name’s Andrew Steele. I’m the author of a book called Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old. Before writing that book I was a scientist — I got a PhD in physics, decided that aging was the most important scientific and humanitarian challenge of our time, and switched over to computational biology for about five years.”

On what he found there

Andrew Steele“While working as a biologist, what I found was that even biologists don’t know a very great deal about aging specifically. I’m married to a doctor — when I first started talking to her about this stuff, I think she thought I was crazy. Thankfully I did manage to change her mind. But it really showed me that we’ve got a huge public understanding problem.”

On why the rigour matters

Andrew Steele“It was essentially two years full-time writing this, and a particular challenge because aging covers every aspect of our biology — and I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I really didn’t want to make any mistakes. I wanted it to be the most solid scientific reference as well as an exciting book. A really important aspect of communicating aging is that we have to be as scientifically rigorous as possible, because that means we can say things people trust — and build trust in the field, which is what I think we need to do.”

On why the field stayed small

Andrew Steele“A lot of biologists have just never heard of the concept of treating aging. They think it’s a natural process of falling apart and there’s not much we can do about it — because historically the field has been very small. There haven’t been many people giving lectures to undergraduates explaining this exciting science, and so there aren’t many people graduating with PhDs in it.”

His actual longevity advice

We need to invest much more in the basic science, and this is work that’s best done by governments.”

On the ten hallmarks — and the eight left out

Andrew Steele“In my book I break aging down into ten hallmarks. Some people have different numbers depending on which scientist you ask.”

Marek Piotrowski“Yes, from six to fifteen, I’ve heard.”

Andrew Steele“Exactly. But I’ll go with ten. We seem to have a relatively good level of investment in two of them. There are senescent cells — old cells that build up as you get older, and we’re getting better at clearing them out. And there’s epigenetic reprogramming, a way of turning back the biological clock inside cells. Both have had a huge amount of interest, media attention and investment. But that means we’ve got eight hallmarks that aren’t really being looked at. Often these don’t have treatments that will show a profit in the next five years — some are still on the drawing board, some have been shown to work in mice or in cells. They aren’t ready for investors or pharma to pile in just yet. So what we need is a lot more investment by governments, who are able to take the long view.”
