Who is Anna Campbell

Food is medicine

Anna Campbell is a scientist and founder in Dunedin, New Zealand, whose whole career has circled one idea: food is medicine. Trained as a plant geneticist and biotechnologist, she now runs Zestt Wellness, working on the plant compounds that can downgrade chronic inflammation — the slow, sustained “always-on” state of the immune system that increasingly underpins chronic disease, from autoimmune conditions to dementia.

Her curiosity was inherited: her father was a geriatrician who drummed into her, young, that we don’t look after our elderly well. And she works in the shadow of one of longevity’s great data sets — the Dunedin Study at the University of Otago, one of the world’s longest-running longitudinal studies, which began in 1972, the same year Anna was born.

Her science is refreshingly humble. Modern medicine reduces a plant to a single compound; Anna is interested in whole plants and the interaction of their many compounds — and she’s the first to say no supplement beats lifestyle: “very few pharmaceutical drugs can have the impact on your health that your lifestyle has.” It’s why she sits in Longevity Basics on the Longevity Map, with a foot in Biohacking Upgrades.

And her single most practical rule is one anyone can start today: feed the trillion microbes inside you with diversity. “Aim for 30 different plant species a week.” Eat the rainbow.

Where we met

We filmed with Anna in Dunedin, on the University of Otago campus — the home of the famous Dunedin Study. She’d had me on her podcast a couple of months before. We talked plants, chronic inflammation, the future of personalised nutrition, and raising kids in nature. We also met her daughter, Hannah.

Eat the rainbow

“Aim for 30 different plant species a week. We hold over a trillion microbes, and their food is the fibre from a diversity of plants.”

Anna Campbell · her message to the next generation · Dunedin

What we want is to live for longer in optimal health — and then die quickly. Keep the “cliff” of decline as far away as possible.

Anna Campbell

Chronic inflammation underpins chronic disease. So what can we do with plants — and with daily lifestyle — to downgrade it?

Anna Campbell

We’ve lost connection with the things that actually make us happy: being out in nature, and being at one with our body.

Anna Campbell

It’s never about one plant or one compound. It’s the combination — plant compounds plus what you do every day.

Straight from the interview

A few of the ideas Anna shared in Dunedin — the ones you can act on this week.

The root: chronic inflammation

Inflammation is meant to switch on when you sprain an ankle — and switch off. Modern life keeps it on: processed food, poor sleep, constant stress. That sustained “chronic” inflammation is now linked to autoimmune disease and even dementia. Calming it — through food and lifestyle first — is one of the highest-leverage things you can do.

“You don’t want your immune system constantly turned on.”

30 plants a week

You carry over a trillion microbes — in your gut, mouth and lungs. The food that lets the healthy ones thrive is fibre, and not one kind: many. Different plants feed different microbes. So don’t just eat bananas or oranges — aim for 30 different plant species a week. Eat the rainbow. It’s the simplest lever on your inner ecosystem.

“Feed your ecosystem — eat 30 plants a week.”

Lifestyle over the pill

Anna makes supplements — and still insists they can never work in isolation. Whole foods over isolated compounds; daily habits over any single drug. The future she sees is personalised: your genome, your environment and your biomarkers guiding personalised diets and lifestyle, not just medicines. Until then, the rule holds: your lifestyle beats almost any pill.

“It’s the combination — plants plus how you live.”

Video interview

The video interview is coming. Recorded interviews go live after the launch of the film & series Live Beyond.

Anna Campbell was filmed on the University of Otago campus in Dunedin, New Zealand, in February 2024. Passages from that conversation:

On chronic inflammation

Anna Campbell“Because of the modern lifestyle — the food we eat, the lack of sleep, many things — we’re going into a sustained state of inflammation, which they call chronic inflammation. You want inflammation when you sprain an ankle, but you don’t want your immune system to be constantly turned on. We’re seeing a rise in autoimmune diseases, and even dementia is now being connected to long periods of chronic inflammation.”

Anna Campbell“So if chronic inflammation underpins chronic disease, what can we do with plants and other things to downgrade it? But it’s never just one plant or one compound — it’s the combination, with what you do in your daily lifestyle. Very few pharmaceutical drugs can have the impact on your health that your lifestyle has.”

On living well, then dying quickly

Anna Campbell“Once you hit about 70, it’s how fast that cliff is that you fall off. If you have chronic disease earlier on, it can be a not-nice period of ageing. What we want is to live for longer in optimal health — and then die quickly. Keep the cliff as far away as possible, and keep this fantastic, physically active life.”

Her message to the next generation

Anna Campbell“My message would be around plants — and not just for the climate, but for your own ecosystem. In our bodies we hold over a trillion microbes. The food that lets the healthy ones thrive is the fibre from plants — and not just one type. So aim for 30 different plant species a week.”

Marek Piotrowski“Eat the rainbow, as they say.”

Anna Campbell“Eat the rainbow. Exactly.”

On nature, and what she wished us

Anna Campbell“In modern life we’ve lost connection with the things that actually truly make us happy — being out in nature, and being at one with our body. New Zealand gives you lots of those opportunities.”

Anna Campbell“What I love about your quest is that you’re not looking for the answer in one place or from one population. We need it all — modern and traditional, Eastern and Western, old and new — and we need to bring them together into some simple messages. That’s really exciting.”
