Who is Eric Dinenberg

A shattered self, made whole

Eric Dinenberg is the mindset doctor at Human Longevity (HLI) in San Diego — the person there who treats the mind as the first instrument of a long, well-lived life. And he came to it the hard way. In medical school he fell off a balcony and broke his neck. A surgeon saved him from paralysis; his body was cured. But he was left with the memory of the accident and PTSD — depression, anxiety, panic attacks. The rest of his journey became healing what he calls “a shattered self.”

That healing became his medicine. At HLI he works with clients on mindfulness and mind-body practice — not as something soft, but as a tool for two things at once: relieving suffering and reaching peak performance. He grew up on a San Diego beach, and later created Beach Walk Therapy: clients walk the sand with him, share what’s going on in the first half, and receive tailored mind-body interventions in the second.

He distinguishes formal practice (a set sit) from informal practice — the small habits that infuse a life: notice your breathing for ten seconds before and after a meeting, savour a meal instead of going reflexively to the fridge. “As you dip into the present moment,” he says, “you’re able to see clearly what was living below the surface.”

It is, in the end, deeply human medicine. He lights up describing a discovery scuba dive with his son in Fiji — watching your bubbles rise and realising that’s your breath, made visible. The through-line of his work: the mind, trained with attention, is one of the most powerful longevity tools we have.

Where we met

We met Eric on the beach where he grew up — the home of his Beach Walk Therapy — and he was as generous with his own story as with his craft. There is something rare about a doctor who has walked through the dark himself and come back with tools rather than platitudes. He reminded us that no amount of biology matters if the mind is at war, and that attention, practised, can quietly change a life.

Below the surface

“As you dip into the present moment, you’re able to see more clearly the things that were living below the surface.”

Eric Dinenberg · HLI, San Diego

I created Beach Walk Therapy — we walk, they share, and I offer the mind-body approaches that fit.

These interventions can relieve suffering, but also bring people to their top performance.

Three of Eric’s practices.

Beach Walk Therapy

Clients walk the San Diego sand with him: the first half to share what’s going on, the second to receive tailored mind-body interventions. Movement, nature and attention, together.

“They share; then I offer what fits.”

Informal practice

Not just the formal sit — the small moments. Ten conscious breaths around a meeting, a truly savoured meal. Tiny doses of presence that, repeated, reshape a whole day.

“It infuses their lives.”

San Diego · from the interview

See below the surface

Presence makes the hidden visible — the reflex to the fridge, the buried stress. Once seen, it can be changed. Mindfulness as clarity, not escape.

“Dip into the present moment.”

Video interview

The video interview is coming. Recorded interviews go live after the launch of the film & series Live Beyond.

Eric Dinenberg was filmed on the beach in San Diego, 2024. Passages from that conversation:

Beach Walk Therapy

Eric Dinenberg“I grew up here — I was four years old on this beach. Later in my career at HLI, I created Beach Walk Therapy. Clients come down and we walk. On the first part, they share what’s going on, how they might want a mindfulness intervention for peak performance or stress. Then I share the mind-body approaches that are appropriate. These interventions can relieve suffering, but also bring them to their top performance.”

Where it began

Eric Dinenberg“When I was in medical school, I had an accident — I fell off a balcony and broke my neck. The surgeon saved me from being paralysed; physically I was cured. But I was left remembering the accident, with PTSD, and I descended into depression, anxiety, panic attacks. The rest of my journey was healing what I felt was a shattered self.”

Formal and informal practice

Eric Dinenberg“With clients at HLI we talk about a formal practice — a set sit — and an informal practice. Notice your breathing just for ten seconds before and after a meeting, and that becomes an informal practice that infuses your life.”

Seeing clearly

Eric Dinenberg“I have a client working on mindful eating. As we practise the savouring, the noticing — even before you engage your senses — things that were living below the surface come up. She wasn’t going reflexively to the fridge anymore, because she could see more clearly.”
