He is one of the most-cited biologists alive, and he came at mortality from the inside — by studying cell death itself, and the different ways a cell can be destroyed. In every one of our bodies, he notes, millions of cells die every second; understanding that turnover is understanding life.
His great subject is autophagy — from the Greek for “self-eating.” The name sounds like a linguistic invitation to believe the cell destroys itself, and Kroemer’s lab set out to prove exactly that. Instead they found the opposite. Autophagy turned out to be an anti-ageing mechanism — the cell’s recycling and clean-up system, which protects it against stress. “Whenever you get a surprise in biology,” he says, “it’s worthwhile to follow it — it could be a discovery.” It was.
What makes it so important is how ancient and universal it is. Autophagy already runs in the most primitive eukaryotic cells you can imagine — even single-celled yeast. It is not a niche clinical curiosity; it is one of biology’s oldest survival programs, conserved across a billion years of life, and it sits at the heart of the modern hallmarks of ageing.

We met Guido at a longevity gathering in Singapore, and he began, characteristically, with the biggest question there is — why we die, and what death is for.
