Not rust — a switch

Ian White has worked in regenerative medicine for over twenty years, most of it long before anyone was willing to say the word longevity out loud. He is candid that he nearly left: his grant applications kept coming back marked too fringe, even while he was winning awards and appearing on the cover of Circulation Research for his work on cardiac regeneration. He was deciding to do something else entirely when the field exploded and he found himself one of the most qualified people in it.

His central observation is about pregnancy. His team was the first to demonstrate that pregnancy is a natural form of heterochronic parabiosis — the classic experiment where a young mouse and an old mouse share a blood supply, and the old one gets younger. A mother and foetus are exactly that arrangement, occurring naturally, several million years in the making.

The consequences are practical. The foetus has to signal to the mother that it is not a threat, which means modulating her inflammation without switching her immune system off — a trick worth capturing. And the exchange changes her too: skin quality improves, eyesight improves, because she has to be at peak physical performance for something extremely demanding. He is also exploring whether the abrupt loss of amniotic fluid at delivery contributes to some forms of postpartum depression.

Underneath sits a claim about what ageing actually is. He does not think we simply rust. He thinks the body actively turns its repair programme off around puberty — and he points at nature for proof that this is not inevitable: the immortal jellyfish that reverts to a juvenile state, lobsters without the usual markers of ageing, a Greenland shark at four hundred years.

His method is the opposite of engineering hubris. Not trying to outsmart nature — listening to it. The Wright brothers watched birds; PCR came from watching bacteriophages. His answer to the objection that rejuvenation is unnatural is that so is brain surgery.

From the walk in Miami — what pregnancy revealed, why he thinks ageing is a switch, and the answer he gave when asked what he wished for us.

Pregnancy as parabiosis

A young individual and an old individual sharing a blood supply, arrived at by evolution rather than by surgery. The foetus signals that it is safe by modulating the mother’s inflammation without suppressing her immunity — and in return her physiology is upgraded for the demands ahead.

Why he thinks it is a switch

The rival theory is that we simply accumulate damage until the system is overwhelmed. He disagrees, and his evidence is zoological: Turritopsis dohrnii reverting to a juvenile state indefinitely, lobsters without ageing markers, the Greenland shark past four hundred. Uncoupling biological from chronological age already exists in nature.

On nearly leaving the field

Ian White“Twenty years ago nobody was really talking about this. For most of my career I’ve been interested in regenerative medicine from the perspective of how we treat disease — and of course ageing is the ultimate disease. But it’s only the last few years that the narrative has allowed us to openly discuss the implications of ageing.”

Ian White“My research wasn’t going anywhere because I couldn’t get grants. A lot of the feedback from the granting authorities was that the work was too fringe. I did win awards — I was on the cover of Circulation Research, I won an award from the American Heart Association for my work on cardiac regeneration. But I just couldn’t get the grants, so I considered doing something completely different. Right when I was making that decision, regenerative medicine and longevity exploded, and I found I was one of the most qualified people in the space.”

On pregnancy as parabiosis

Ian White“Pregnancy is a symbiotic relationship, and we were the first to demonstrate that pregnancy is a natural form of heterochronic parabiosis. The idea comes from research done at Harvard where you took a young mouse and an old mouse and allowed them to share a blood supply. The young mouse got older, and the old mouse got younger. That’s the same situation as pregnancy — a young individual and an old individual sharing a blood supply.”

Ian White“The foetus is essentially a parasite, so it has to inform the mother that it’s not dangerous. It modulates inflammation without turning the immune system off. And that immune modulation is something we can capture and harvest and use medicinally. The amniotic fluid goes through her blood supply and changes her physiology too, so she can deal with the rigours of pregnancy. Her skin quality increases, her eyesight improves.”

On what the skin is being told

Ian White“What we’re finding is that the product is able to educate the skin like it does when it’s young. When you apply it, the skin gets all the raw ingredients, all the building blocks it needs to heal itself like it would if it were a foetus.”

On listening to nature

Ian White“All of my research throughout my entire career, all the observations and all the progress, have come by just listening to nature. If we look at the Wright brothers — that’s how we learned to fly. PCR technology came from looking at bacteriophages and how they interact with bacteria. All the major advancements in science have come by observing nature, not trying to outsmart nature. For seven million years the human body has been evolving to repair, regenerate and replicate.”

On whether rejuvenation is “unnatural”

Ian White“If you look at modern medicine, that’s technically unnatural too. It’s not natural to undergo complex surgeries, brain surgeries, tumour therapies. These are all advancements that might have been considered unnatural at some point. This is just the natural evolution of medicine. We’re understanding how the body heals itself, rather than intervening with surgery or pharmaceuticals. The body knows how to fix itself. It just forgets, or actively turns it off over time — and all we’re doing is asking the body to turn it back on.”

On the animals that do not age

Ian White“Most species age, but there are some that don’t. Turritopsis dohrnii is the immortal jellyfish — it becomes an adult, then dedifferentiates its tissues back to being a young individual again, and just keeps doing that. Same with lobsters: you can’t see markers of ageing in a lobster the way you would in a human. They mostly die from growing so large they can’t moult. The Greenland shark lives over four hundred years. So there are species able to uncouple biological ageing from chronological ageing. It exists in nature. It’s possible.”

Ian White“There’s a lot of debate over whether we age because we rust like a car — accumulate so much damage it overwhelms the system. I believe it’s an active process. The body repairs itself for a period of time, then turns that repair mechanism off. If something is turned off, it must have the ability to turn back on.”

His message to Aleksander’s generation

Ian White“We start ageing really at puberty — once we stop growing, we stop regenerating at the level we did when we were younger. So if they’re interested in a quality long life, start thinking about it now. Cutting sugar out. Improving what you put into your body. Don’t wait until it’s too late. By the time you’re sixty it’s not over, but it’s harder. The analogy is a car on a hill with a rope — it’s easier to pull it up if it’s only just over the threshold. If it’s all the way down, you’ve got to pull it all the way up.”

His wish for the quest

Ian White“The first thing is — enjoy each other’s company. This is a wonderful opportunity. I’m actually quite jealous; I spend a lot of time away from my family, so seeing what you’re doing here is really wonderful.”

Ian White“What I hope you get out of it is an understanding of what you’re contributing to this industry. I’ve spent my whole career learning about biology and regenerative medicine and ageing, but I’m just one component. You’re a fundamental component as well, because if we don’t communicate it, we’re not going to make a lot of progress. A few years ago not many people knew about this industry. Now we’re building a tidal wave — more interest, more excitement, more funding, which means I can do the research I want to do. Without you and your efforts it’s going to be much, much harder for us. So I’d just like to say thank you.”
