Who is Jeffrey Chew

Fix the root cause

Jeffrey Chew practises functional medicine at the Zung Beauty Clinic in Kuala Lumpur — and he’s refreshingly honest about what actually heals people. Functional medicine, as he describes it, is about finding the root cause of illness and correcting it at the level of the whole system, so the disease is removed from the picture — usually through the body’s own natural processes rather than drugs and surgery.

The honesty is the point. “I would be lying,” he says, “if it were all about products.” Most healing comes from lifestyle changes, because most disease is caused by lifestyle in the first place. Nutraceuticals, injectables and clinic technology facilitate the healing — often necessary, but never a replacement for the basics. His first job with any patient is to dig out their real lifestyle pattern; the funny truth, he laughs, is that people usually already know why they’re sick.

From there it’s personalised and data-driven — which is exactly why he sits in Biohacking Upgrades. He tailors nutraceuticals (“nutrients as medicine,” high-dose and well-formulated, distinct from over-the-counter supplements) to each person’s genetic and blood-biomarker data, and builds the whole programme around the patient’s own goal, most often the same one: to live long and disease-free.

And yes, it’s a beauty clinic, so the body-optimisation tech is here too — EMSculpt Neo to burn visceral fat and build muscle, InBody tracking, intermittent fasting and ketosis for stubborn belly fat. Chew is candid that this fits modern life, and that he lives that modern life himself. The through-line is consistent: lifestyle first, technology as the accelerator.

Where we met

We filmed with Jeffrey at his clinic in Kuala Lumpur — EMSculpt beds humming in the background — and what stayed with us wasn’t the machines but his candour. He runs a beauty-and-optimisation clinic and still insists, plainly, that the real medicine is how you live. The tech facilitates; the lifestyle heals. It’s biohacking with its feet on the ground.

Lifestyle heals

“We discover the root cause of illness and rectify it from the root, from a whole-system point of view, so the disease is removed from the picture — most of the time through the body’s own natural processes.”

Jeffrey Chew · Kuala Lumpur

Functional medicine is about discovering the root causes of illness and rectifying them — so the disease is removed from the picture.

Jeffrey Chew

Most healing comes from lifestyle changes, because the disease is caused by lifestyle. The products only facilitate.

Jeffrey Chew

Nutraceuticals are nutrients as medicine — high-dose, well-formulated, and ideally tailored to your genetic and blood data.

Jeffrey Chew

I always ask: what is your goal? Most people say the same thing — longevity, disease-free. Then I design the programme around that.

Straight from the interview

Three things Jeffrey keeps coming back to.

Root cause, not symptom

Functional medicine looks past the symptom to the system — the goal is to find and correct why the illness is there, so it leaves the picture, usually via the body’s own processes rather than drugs or surgery. Fix the cause and the disease has no reason to stay.

“Remove the cause, remove the disease.”

Kuala Lumpur · from the interview

Lifestyle first, products facilitate

He’s blunt that it isn’t about products. Disease is largely made by lifestyle, so lifestyle is where the healing is. Nutraceuticals and injectables are facilitators — often needed, never a substitute. The more lifestyle a patient changes, the less they lean on the pills.

“The products facilitate. Lifestyle heals.”

Personalised by data

Nutraceuticals as “nutrients as medicine,” dosed and formulated for the individual using genetic and blood-biomarker data — more detox support for the drinker, less for the already-healthy. Every programme is built around the patient’s own goal, tracked with real measurements.

“Tailored to your makeup, not off the shelf.”

Video interview

The video interview is coming. Recorded interviews go live after the launch of the film & series Live Beyond.

Jeffrey Chew was filmed at Zung Beauty Clinic, Kuala Lumpur, 2024. Passages from that conversation:

What functional medicine is

Jeffrey Chew“Functional medicine is a very revolutionary medicine. Long story short: we’re all about discovering the root causes of illness, and rectifying from the root-cause level — from systems biology, a multiple-system point of view — so that the disease is removed from the picture. Most of the time this involves a natural process in the body, as opposed to the pharmaceutical approach of using pills.”

Why lifestyle comes first

Jeffrey Chew“I would be lying if it were all about products. Most of the things in healing come from lifestyle changes, because the disease is caused by lifestyle. The products — the nutraceuticals, the injectables — they facilitate the healing process. It’s often necessary, but we cannot omit lifestyle by using only products. So I spend a great deal of time digging out the current lifestyle pattern. It’s funny — people actually know why they’re sick, and they know how bad their lifestyle is, but they’re looking for a cure.”

Nutrients as medicine

Jeffrey Chew“Nutraceuticals are supplements as medicine — distinct from over-the-counter supplements. When the dosage is high or the formulation is very well designed, they’re in the nutraceutical category: nutrients as medicine. Ideally all of them should be tailored to a person’s makeup, so we need data — genetic data, and current data from blood biomarkers — to know which area needs more help. A frequent drinker obviously needs more detox support; a very healthy person doesn’t.”

Built around your goal

Jeffrey Chew“I always ask: what is your goal, what do you want to achieve? Most people say longevity, disease-free. If they have that aim, I use it to design the treatment programme — so it’s not something I want them to do, it’s something they want. We try to instil as many lifestyle changes as possible, and then we can rely less on the pills and injectables.”
