And here is where it meets longevity. “When you think about it,” JED says, “ageing is, in fact, an inflammatory disease.” So much of how and why the body ages comes down to chronic, low-grade inflammation — the “inflammaging” researchers now talk about. We met JED in Toronto — a scientist’s scientist, precise and warm, who can take something as hyped as “stem cells” and make it clear and honest in a few sentences. He walked us through what MSCs really are, the anti-inflammatory power that surprised the field, and the link between inflammation and ageing — without ever overselling it.

You can inject MSCs into a person to treat an inflammatory disease, because inflammation is part of the immune process — and they have a profound effect on it.”
John Davies“One question is: what’s the relationship between this and longevity? Well, when you think about it, ageing is in fact an inflammatory disease. The way the body ages, and the reasons why, are to a large extent to do with inflammation. So if you’ve got a biologic system that can reduce that, there’s the connection.”
John Davies“My question would be, why? Isn’t it more important — at least in the interim — to rise to the challenge of treating the real problems first? I try to hold the promise and the caution at the same time.”
