Remove everything, and drop

Nadeem Jiwani runs Float Valley in Markham, Ontario — and has for over seven years. The idea is beautifully simple: take away every external input and see what the body does on its own. In a float tank there is no light, no sound, no feeling. With nothing to react to, the nervous system drops, by itself, into a very deep state of relaxation — a meditation you don’t have to work for.

It’s biochemistry as much as psychology. You float in a dense solution of Epsom salt — which is magnesium, and magnesium is best absorbed not orally but through the skin. So while the mind quiets, the body takes up one of the minerals modern life most often lacks. This is exactly the kind of low-risk, high-return intervention that belongs in Biohacking Upgrades.

Nadeem is candid that this is also a tool for going deep. With no stimuli to hold onto, attention turns inward fast — he describes hours-long floats, and how the tank can amplify inner work. For people who struggle to reach a meditative state quickly, he pairs it with gentle cues like a soft strobe (eyes closed) to guide the brain there faster.

What he keeps coming back to is rest as medicine. In a culture that treats stillness as time wasted, an hour with nothing — no phone, no light, no gravity — can be one of the most restorative and, over time, longevity-protective things you do. “That’s why,” he says simply, “it’s a great tool for longevity.”

Where we met

We visited Nadeem at Float Valley and, of course, he offered to book us in for a couple of hours in the tank. He speaks about floating the way some people speak about a great teacher — it changed a lot for him personally, and he’s spent seven years helping others find the same deep quiet. In a quest full of high-tech interventions, his was a reminder that sometimes the upgrade is subtraction.

“In there, there’s no light, no sound, no feeling. Your body, without that external stimuli, goes into a very, very deep state of relaxation, or meditation, by itself.”

Rest as medicine

“Being in the float tank, in that much Epsom salt, is very powerful. Epsom salt is magnesium — and magnesium is best absorbed not orally, but through the skin.”

Three things the tank does.

Subtract everything

No light, no sound, no sense of your own weight. With nothing to react to, the nervous system stops bracing and drops into deep rest — a meditative state most people can’t reach on a cushion.

“Deep relaxation, by itself.”

Magnesium in

The water is a dense Epsom-salt solution — magnesium — and the skin is the best route to absorb it. So the body tops up a mineral modern life depletes, while the mind goes quiet.

“Best absorbed through the skin.”

Go inward

With no stimuli to grab, attention turns inward fast. Nadeem uses gentle cues, like a soft strobe with closed eyes, to help people who struggle reach the meditative state more quickly.

“You focus inwards, very fast.”

Video interview

The video interview is coming. Recorded interviews go live after the launch of the film & series Live Beyond.

Nadeem Jiwani was filmed at Float Valley, Markham, 2024. Passages from that conversation:

What Float Valley is

Nadeem Jiwani“We’re known as Float Valley, here in Markham, Ontario — we’ve been doing this about seven years now. Our main service is float therapy, or sensory deprivation. When you’re in there, there’s no light, no sound, no feeling. Your body, without that external stimuli, goes into a very, very deep state of relaxation or meditation, by itself.”

The magnesium

Nadeem Jiwani“Being in the float tank, in that much Epsom salt, is very powerful. Epsom salt is also magnesium — and magnesium is best absorbed not orally, but through the skin. So while you rest, your body is taking it up.”

Going deep

Nadeem Jiwani“You can spend four or five hours in a float tank and go very, very deep. Because there’s no external stimuli, you focus inwards very fast. For people who have trouble getting to that meditative state — especially if you’re coming in wound up — a soft strobe with your eyes closed can help guide you there faster.”

Why it’s for longevity

Nadeem Jiwani“It’s a reset most people never give themselves — no phone, no light, no gravity. That deep rest is restorative. That’s why it’s a great tool for longevity.”
