Levels of Longevity Map Tim explores
Tim is one of 100+ experts in the Live Beyond Project — a father & son quest for longevity.
Discover Live Beyond →On the Australian leg of the quest, Marek and Aleksander were welcomed into a sunrise Aboriginal ceremony at Bouddi National Park on the NSW Central Coast, led by Tim Selwyn, founder of Girri Girra Aboriginal Experiences — a conversation about purpose, belonging and connection to the land. It became one of the most emotional moments of the whole year.
The ceremony meant so much to Aleksander that he wanted to experience it rather than film it — so Marek filmed it himself. It sits in Longevity Basics on the Longevity Map for a reason: long before there were clinics or clocks, the world’s oldest living cultures understood that a life lived with purpose, in community, connected to place, is a longer and fuller one. That’s not folklore — it’s the same lesson the Blue Zones keep teaching.
Tim describes himself as “a proud Aboriginal man dedicated to honouring the ancient lore of his people and the spirits of his ancestors through art, storytelling and cultural education.” His people are the Wongaibon of Central West New South Wales; his mother was born on Wiradjuri country in Dubbo, and he was born on Wailwan country at Gilgandra. Through Girri Girra, the 100% Aboriginal-owned business he founded, he leads Walks on Country, Welcome to Country and smoking ceremonies at Bouddi — and shares his art.
Tim’s presence on this page is a mark of respect: proof that the quest listened not only to scientists in labs, but to healers, elders and keepers of knowledge who have been thinking about how to live well for tens of thousands of years.
Katia Dowling hosted us on the Central Coast, north of Sydney, and through that world we were invited to a sunrise Aboriginal ceremony with Tim at Bouddi National Park, about purpose. It was deeply emotional — Alek wanted to live it, not film it, so I filmed it myself. Speaking with the local elders and people, learning their story and their relationship to the land, was one of the moments I carry most.
“It was deeply emotional. Alek wanted to experience it, not film it — so I filmed it myself.”
— Tim Selwyn, Bouddi, Australia
“Long before clinics and clocks, the oldest cultures knew: purpose, community and connection to the land are how you live well, and long.”
Tim · On the ceremony with Tim · AustraliaA great ceremony with the Aboriginal people — learning their story, their traditions, and their relationship to their land.
TimThe ceremony was very emotional for Alek. He wanted to fully experience it. He didn’t want to film it — so I did.
TimA short note on why an Aboriginal ceremony belongs on a longevity map — and what purpose has to do with living longer.
Across the whole quest, one theme repeated from the labs to the Blue Zones to this dune in Australia: people with a clear sense of purpose live longer and better. It is one of the most robust findings in longevity — and one of the oldest teachings of Aboriginal culture. Tim spoke to us about exactly this.
“A life with purpose is a longer life.”
Australia · from the interviewBelonging — to a place, a people, a story — is its own kind of health. The world’s oldest living culture has always understood that we are not separate from the land we live on. It’s a foundation modern science is only now catching up to, measuring it as community, nature exposure and meaning.
“We are not separate from the land.”
Australia · from the interviewAlek chose to experience the ceremony rather than record it — and that choice says something about the whole project. The quest was never only about capturing footage; it was about being changed by the people we met. Tim was one of them.
“He wanted to live it, not film it.”
Australia · from the interviewTim Selwyn is the founder of Girri Girra Aboriginal Experiences, a 100% Aboriginal-owned cultural business on the NSW Central Coast. If this page moved you, the best thing you can do is go and walk on Country with him.
The video interview is coming. Recorded interviews go live after the launch of the film & series Live Beyond.
The ceremony with Tim was, at Aleksander’s wish, experienced rather than filmed — so we hold it here in Marek’s own words, with respect.
Marek Piotrowski“A great ceremony with the Aboriginal people — learning their story, about their traditions and about their land. It was very important to speak to the local tribes and people.”
Marek Piotrowski“The ceremony was very emotional for Alek. He wanted to fully experience it. He didn’t want to film it — I did it. Some things you live rather than record.”
Marek Piotrowski“Everywhere on the quest, from the labs to the Blue Zones to this coast, the same lesson kept returning: a life lived with purpose, in community, connected to something bigger, is a longer and fuller one.”
