His bet is partial epigenetic reprogramming, and his reason is clear-eyed rather than hype. Most interventions touch one or two of the hallmarks of ageing; very few touch more than half. Reprogramming, he argues, is one of the only approaches that might reach most of ageing at once, at the cellular level.
What it actually means: turning back the clock of a cell — restoring how it worked when it was young, before the damage of a lifetime of replication. His analogies are for the rest of us: a reboot, a factory reset, reinstalling the operating system while keeping your files.
The mechanism borrows something nature already does. When sperm and egg combine, we begin “old” — and within days there is a burst of de-ageing during embryogenesis, the one moment in human biology where it naturally happens. Shinya Yamanaka won a Nobel Prize for isolating the factors that can drive a cell back toward that youthful state. Reprogramming triggers that program again, deliberately, in a way evolution never planned — the trick being to rewind the clock without erasing the cell’s identity entirely.
He is candid and disarming about his own habits — he “cheats a lot,” eats less well and exercises less than he should, and looks to the biotechnology to find the shortcuts. It is an honest admission from someone whose day job is engineering the shortcut for everyone else.
We had met Boris once before in London, and Marek came back because the first conversation had been so open — a scientist genuinely willing to talk about the far future without flinching. This one runs from the heat death of the universe to the mechanics of a single cell’s reset, and it is one of the most ambitious, and most cheerful, interviews on the quest.

Marek Piotrowski“How long are you planning to live on this planet?”
Boris Djordjevic“Until the heat death of the universe — which might never happen, because I hope we can reach a stage where we can maintain things indefinitely, even entropy.”
Marek Piotrowski“So you don’t want to die?”
Boris Djordjevic“No.”
Boris Djordjevic“There are a large number of interventions that address one or two of the hallmarks of ageing at once, and very little that can affect more than half. The reason I work in partial reprogramming is that I believe it’s one of the ways you can address at the very least half of the ageing problem on a cellular level.”
Boris Djordjevic“Being able, in simple terms, to turn back the clock of the cell — to restore the way the cell functioned when it was young, before all the replication and damage that influenced how it was working. A little like reinstalling your operating system on a computer.”
Marek Piotrowski“So it’s like a reboot?”
Boris Djordjevic“Yeah, like a reset. A factory reset.”
Boris Djordjevic“To run this program you’re triggering something the cells already have, which happens in nature during embryogenesis. When the father and mother cell combine, we are born old, and after a few days there is this de-ageing — extremely interesting, and the only time in humans, in nature, where it seems to happen. Partial reprogramming uses the Yamanaka factors to trigger that program once again, in a way nature hasn’t planned.”
Boris Djordjevic“What Shinya Yamanaka did was isolate which of these transcription factors are able to make a cell turn back into a stem cell — that’s full reprogramming. As the technology to analyse DNA evolved, we began to realise it’s not just turning a cell into a stem cell: there’s a process, in stages, that first rewinds the clock of the cell. The art is doing that partially — without pushing it all the way and losing what the cell is.”
Boris Djordjevic“Perhaps opposite to many other people — I cheat a lot, which means I don’t eat as healthy as I could, or exercise as much as I should. But I’m in the biotechnology and the longevity research, on the clinical side as well, so I try to find a few shortcuts to get the results.”
