The lifeboat — and what it could do today

James Arrowood runs the Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Arizona, the cryonics organisation that has been operating since 1972. It is the place most people picture when they picture cryonics, and almost everything most people believe about it is wrong.

It isn’t, for a start, only for the very rich. Most members fund it through life insurance, which brings the cost closer to that of a funeral than to the headline number people repeat. Members carry a necklace, a bracelet and a wallet card with a phone number on them.

When that number is called, Alcor stops. James keeps a red phone; if it rings, the research halts and the building empties. A DART team — Deployment and Recovery — assembles and travels, aiming to be on a flight within two hours and willing to go anywhere. They have recovered someone off the coast of Africa. The teams are three to five people: nurses, hospice workers, first responders, lawyers, sometimes doctors, and a contingent of former special forces, recruited because people whose lives once depended on the contents of their kit do not arrive somewhere remote missing a piece of equipment. They must pass tests and simulations, not merely attend a course.

But the part of his argument that matters most has nothing to do with reviving anyone. The brain, he points out, is an organ — a very complex, very fragile one. A kidney is a simpler one, and today a donated kidney stays viable for only six to ten hours. If preservation can be made to work in a simple organ, even partially, it becomes organ banking — and that saves lives immediately, not eventually. That, not revival, is what he wants Alcor to prove.

Where we met

We filmed at Alcor in Arizona, standing between the tall steel dewars where the patients are kept. Aleksander led this interview — he had wanted to understand the process end to end, and he asked James to walk him through it step by step. There is a particular quality to an eighteen-year-old asking, calmly and without flinching, exactly what happens to a body and why.

From Aleksander’s conversation with James at Alcor — how a recovery actually runs, why organ banking is the real prize, and what he wants to be true in ten years.

How a recovery actually runs

A call comes in. A three-to-five person team of medics, first responders and former special forces assembles and aims to be flying within two hours. Behind them, ten or twelve more people handle logistics, hospitals, families and paperwork. They have gone as far as the coast of Africa.

Why organ banking is the real prize

A donated kidney is viable for six to ten hours. If ultra-cold preservation can pause decay in a simple organ — even at partial success — the transplant system changes, and people are saved now rather than hypothetically.

His ten-year test

He isn’t asking to be believed — he’s asking for a proof of concept in a simpler organ. Show it works even ten percent of the time, he argues, and the resources arrive on their own. He is explicit that he doesn’t need to be around to see it.

On what a member actually signs up to

Aleksander Piotrowski“I’m interested in how the whole process of cryopreserving looks. Could you walk me through it?”

James Arrowood“Most people fund it through life insurance. They hear this big number — it doesn’t actually cost that if you do it through life insurance. It’s similar to the cost of a funeral you might have. When you become a member you’re sent a necklace, a wallet card and a bracelet, and it has a phone number on it.”

On the red phone

James Arrowood“If something happens to you, Alcor gets a phone call. We have a medical response team. Ideally we know ahead of time — if someone is terminally ill we can be bedside. I have several phones, and this is my red phone. If that goes off, everything around here stops. It’s hard for the research, because literally the whole place shuts down and our team comes out.”

On who is on the team

James Arrowood“Our teams are medical people — nurses, fire, first responders. And yes, a component are former military special forces. They’re trained to carry gear and operate in adverse conditions, and they get field medical training, which is immensely valuable, because you have to do these processes quickly and confidently. You couple them with medical professionals who know how to talk to hospitals and to families while the procedure is happening.”

On why speed alone isn’t enough

James Arrowood“There are equations we use to determine how well something was done, because just because something was done quickly doesn’t mean it was done well. You need time to temperature, the cooling process — but you need it done really well, with very expensive specialised equipment. We had a recovery off the coast of Africa. If you’re off the coast of Africa and you don’t have the piece of equipment you need, you’re not getting it.”

On organ banking — the nearer goal

James Arrowood“The aspirational goal is organ banking. Your kidneys right now — presumably they’re good, they’re healthy. If you pass away, if we could preserve those… right now they only live for six to ten hours. The brain is an organ. It’s just like a kidney in a sense; the difference is it’s much more complex. What Alcor does is research preservation using ultra-cold temperatures, so it stops decay — it stops chemicals and bacteria damaging your organs, and just pauses everything. That’s the goal. We want to pause damage.”

On what proof would change

James Arrowood“If we take simpler organs — a kidney, or a portion of a liver — and we can show proof of concept, then nothing matters after that to me. Whether I’m alive or dead, all of the resources are going to come once you show, ‘hey, this is a real thing now.’ The brain is much more complicated, much more fragile. But if you can show it in another organ — which I think is utterly possible — I think it just hasn’t been done for lack of resources.”

His wish for the quest

Aleksander Piotrowski“What would you wish us for the rest of our quest for longevity around the world?”

James Arrowood“People focus microscopically on the area around them and lose sight of the fact that this answer may in fact come from a remote village in Africa. There might be a person who holds the key in their brain to how to make this work — they could be anywhere in the world. Our obligation is to go find it. I don’t care who gets the credit. It doesn’t have to be somebody from the US. You guys are connectors — you’re part of the network now, because you put yourself there. Each one of us may be a tiny lost-to-history name in this process. That’s okay, so long as we moved it a centimetre forward individually. That should be your goal. Move this thing a centimetre forward. That’s it.”
